A Game Changing Lesson From A Pro

One of my big fears returning to ballet class after so many, many months off was the notion that it would very much be like starting from scratch. After all, I haven’t been at this pursuit all that long in the first place and my learning curve with ballet has been frighteningly steep. Let us just agree that I am not a natural when it comes to dance. Well, to my great joy, I’m not starting from zero. Both my brain and my body remember more than I expected. I’m still trying to find my arms and legs – in moving combinations my feet still feel a little lost and my arms sort of drift around looking for their correct placement.

Now because I’m still trying to work out how my foot will react to dancing, I’m still in a sort of trial phase. I believe that I’ve found a good way to tape that allows me flexibility but also offers the support that I still need. So I feel pretty good about that. My teachers and I have agreed that it’s best to dance on flat feet to start back and build strength back in my feet by dancing with minimal impact. So everything might have to be re-adjusted as I go back up on my toes… hopefully I can start working into that in this coming week. Dancing on flat feet has been challenging! Every little bit of training in me wants to get up there in relevé!

But as I’ve been given a sort of fresh start, I’ve decided that it’s a great opportunity to try to deal with some of my very bad habits and try to readjust my approach to dancing.

Amazingly, I’ve been doing pretty well with my major bad habits.

  1. Looking down and watching my feet.
  2. Following other people in class.
  3. Getting overwhelmed with each individual step so that I end up hiccuping through a combination rather than flowing and dancing.
  4. Not using the mirror well.
  5. Tensing up instead of extending and reaching.
  6. Losing my turnout and short-changing my pliés.

Of course, there are hundreds (millions) of other things I need to work on but those six things have been my major hurdles, not a class would go by without hearing at least half a dozen times, “Lorry, stop looking down!” I’ve actually been pretty good about keeping my head up now – this really comes in handy to NOT follow other people. As I’m becoming more aware of making these changes to how I work in class, I’ve realized that I need to change my approach to ballet class. I’ve been a student my entire life. I collect degrees. It’s something that I love and I’m good at it. Really good. I guess I thought that I could approach ballet class the way that I would approach any new 101 class. Learn the terminology, learn the concepts, memorize the timelines, milestones, and major figures. In the beginning a student learns a lot by rote learning, that’s how we get past the 101 stage in learning, we create a foundation of knowledge. Ballet class is very much based on rote learning so I thought I was A-Okay in my approach. Until…

and to my great surprise and delight Patrick de Bana responded with a laugh and words of wisdom. Words that really made me think about my approach to class. I have been thinking about “learning” in terms of rote learning, learning individual steps by virtue of tons of repetition, corrections, and more repetition. And this is how ballet class works, yes, but I think that learning by “understanding” is a whole other mindset. It’s still tons of repetition, corrections, and more repetition but it’s up to me to engage in understanding. Understanding the movement, the music, the relationship between the two, what I as an individual dancer can and should be doing – which as much as we strive to be cookie cutter perfect – is still part of our jobs as adult dancers, to work to find our limits and then to safely push past through them, to discover dancing and not just steps. I don’t want to just learn how to do a pirouette or a pique or a rond de jambe.  I want to dance. I want to understand dance as a dancer.

I’m definitely taking these words to heart and to class… “the important part is to understand and then… enjoy.”

Week 1: Back at the Barre

Well, in my first full week back to dancing, I managed three beginner classes. I think that’ s non-too-shabby. It’s been a very long time since my injury so I’m pretty sure that it’s well healed. Unfortunately it’s also been a long time since I’ve seen my doctor or physio about it either so… yeah, I don’t recommend that but…

I was shown a couple of different ways to tape my foot. The basic gist being that I won’t know what will work best for me until I try it out. Well, that was like six months ago. At least I remember the methods for taping and the toe taping itself doesn’t change at all. So I found my box of tapes ( not easy as I started stashing things like a squirrel, too busy with dissertation to be able to deal with anything), and taped up. I also have a half compression sock that looks kind of silly but works very well.

I’m going to be perfectly honest and tell you that going back hasn’t been easy mentally and emotionally because I’m a wreck! I look tired and stressed and we don’t even need to discuss the dissertation weight! Ugh. I abhor new things with a passion so I haven’t had the courage to try any of the new studios that I have found closer to home. And I’ve just been too tired for the drive across town… but that is where the awesome teacher is. I won’t kid myself that no one will notice that I look like something dragged in after a disaster but maybe no one will care…too much… or will at least be too polite to point it out.

I walked into the studio and got a big big hug from Awesome Teacher who declared it “the best surprise ever.” It was nice to be home. With one class, everything changed. My whole body began to feel right again, my energy level shifted, the lightness of being happy returned, even my confidence level found a new step. I’m not saying it was magical and suddenly I was svelte and perfect. But I found the courage to try one of the new studios, threw down some pretty decent single pirouettes, and started rummaging through my box of leotards knowing that I’ll be back in those soon. And that’s real progress. My foot will come along – actually it held up really well – but my real challenge is  to find myself again and maybe even to discover a dancer.

I’m even thinking of hitting the gym before dayjob! How is that for being inspired!
